La posidònia sol ser anomenada alga encara que no ho és. Aquesta planta va ser considerada primerament com a alga el 1737 per Ludwig, i no fou reconeguda fins més tard com una planta superior.
El nom de posidònia ve de Posidó, una divinitat grega també anomenada Neptú. Això es deu al fet que la posidònia és autòctona del mediterrani i Posidó era el déu de la Mar Mediterrània.
