The goddess Tanit was the most important deity of the Carthaginian culture and goddess of Ibiza since the 5th century B.C. Its forms, markedly feminine, are associated to fertility and lunar cycles.
To the amulets with the image of Tanit were ascribed magic properties to cause pregnancy, regularize the menstrual cycle and plenty of benefits of all kinds, since its influence was extended to all the earth, sea and night matters.
The god Bes comes from the Egyptian mythology although it was the Phoenician civilization who introduced him in the island of Ibiza, and in fact, some theories defend that the current name originated from the Phoenician naming Kibosh (the island of Bes).
God Bes magic amulets were always so popular in the shape of pendants and even to put in children beds since it was deeply believed that it kept its owner away from any harm and dispelled the evil spirits that besieged sleep.
The scapulars, made popular by the Catholic religion, used to be worn together with the other vestments so the magic or miraculous properties benefit its bearer. This scapular has several configurations so it can show one or both images.
